Scanning with Siteworks
Siteworks can be used to collect both point cloud scans and photo panoramas with the SX12 scanning total station. The instrument must be set up in the project coordinate system (for example, at an established location on a control point or via resection) to complete a scan. If the SX12 instrument is not set up and you tried to perform a scan, the Siteworks software informs you that you must complete a station setup and takes you to the Station Setup menu. You cannot take a “free-station” scan and collect a non-georeferenced point cloud. To collect a photo panorama, you cannot collect only a photo panorama; you also must collect a point cloud.
At the completion of the scan, the data are sent from the SX12 instrument to the Siteworks controller over the currently selected communication protocol (Wi-Fi, radio, or cable). Wi-Fi or cable is the preferred connection method when performing a scan, due to the limited bandwidth of the 2.4 GHz radio connections. If the scan transfer fails or the instrument or data collector battery dies during the scan, then the scan data are lost and the scan will need to be recollected.
The scan data engine used by Siteworks has some system path limitations that limit the length of the work order name if a long project name and work order name are used. If the path length is too long when attempting to start a scan, Siteworks prompts you to create a new work order with a shorter length.
