Troubleshooting displayed data in the Pilot software

Problem

I cannot get Position/Heading/ROT data displayed in the Pilot software.

Solution

The most common issues are:

  • The Portable Pilot Units (PPU) do not have good visibility to the satellites. The SPS585 smart antenna should ideally have no obstructions above 15° from horizon in all directions.
  • The SPS585 smart antennas are in a high multipath location and satellite signals are being reflected off nearby surfaces. Ideally the units should be located away from, or above metal structures.
  • The two units have no Wi-Fi communications. Ideally the units should have line of sight between them. The bridge structure and lead-based windows can be a barrier to the Wi-Fi signal.

Keypad icons

Check the illuminated icons on the keypads of both the Moving Base and the Heading units.

The Wireless Communications icon alternates between Bluetooth (blue) and Wi-Fi (amber) every 15 seconds. The PPU system only uses Wi-Fi so you can ignore the Bluetooth status.

After making changes it is good practice to restart the full system in the following order:

  1. Moving Base PPU.
  2. Heading PPU.
  3. iPad Wi-Fi connection.
  4. Pilot software (close by double-clicking and swiping).

Reposition the units so there is line of sight between them.

Reposition the unit with a clearer view of the sky.

Wait for 5 minutes. If there is no change, reposition the unit with a clearer view of the sky.

Check that the Moving Base unit is sending corrections.

For more information about the LEDs, see Button and LED Operations.

The following photograph of the SPS585 Heading smart antenna shows that all icons are solid which means:

  • Satellite reception and positioning is good
  • The Wi-Fi is connected to the Moving Base Access Point
  • Corrections are being received from the Moving Base receiver
