Explode Merged Points

If your project includes a point that is the result of merging multiple points in the field (by making multiple side-shot observations to the same point ID) or in Trimble Business Center (by using the Merge Points command or by renaming points), you can explode the merged point to re-create the component points used in the merge. This can be helpful if, for example, you want to identify and eliminate outliers used in the original merge and then re-merge the remaining points using the Merge Points command.

Note: Merged station points cannot be exploded.

Prerequisites:

To access the command:

To explode merged points:

  1. In the Area selection field in the Explode Point command pane, do one of the following:
    • If you want to work with all explodable points in the project, leave this field blank
    • If you want to work with only specific explodable points in the project, click in this field and select the point(s) you want to work with by doing one the following:
      • In theProject Exploreror Point Spreadsheet, select the point, or use Shift + click or Ctrl + click to select multiple points.
      • In a graphic view, drag the selection box around the point(s) you want to include.
      • Click the Options button to select one or more points using one of the available options.
  2. Click the Find Explodable Points button.

All explodable points that meet your selection criteria are displayed in the Explodable points list. The Count field displays the number of component points that will be created when each point is exploded. You can select the Delete icon to remove a point from the list.

  3. If necessary, select any of the Explode options:
    • Add suffix to component point names - If you want to append a suffix to the names of the component points resulting from exploding a selected point, click this check box and enter an appropriate suffix in the field.
    • Create averaged point - If you want to create an averaged point from the exploded component points, select this option.
    • Automatically center in Plan View - If you want each point you select in the Explodable points list to be automatically centered in the Plan View, select this option.

Note: If you are looking for outliers to delete or disable and plan to undo the point explosion or re-merge the remaining component points, adding a suffix and/or creating an averaged point may not provide any benefit.

  4. In the Explodable points list, select the point(s) you want to explode.

To select multiple points, use Shift + click or Ctrl + click.

  5. Click the Explode button.

The selected explodable points are exploded into their component points and the project is re-computed. Exploded points are no longer displayed in the Explodable points list.

If you exploded a point to identify outliers and you don't find any, you can click the Undo button in the Quick Access Toolbar to undo the point explosion. If you do identify one or more outliers, you can select to delete or disable them and then use the Merge Points command to merge the remaining component points.

Note the following when working with explodable points:

  • When an explodable point contains disabled observations, the number of component points will be 1 higher than the amount displayed in the Count field. The extra point will contain only the disabled observations. Because this point's position cannot be computed, it will not be displayed in the Plan View until you enable the observations.
  • When an explodable point contains one or more baselines but no post-processed vectors, the baselines will go with one of the component points. Because baselines cannot determine point position, this point will not be displayed in the Plan View until you process the baselines.
