Manage Layer Groups

Create groups and assign layers to them to make it easier to manage the visibility of objects using the View Filter Manager. Changing the visibility of a layer group changes the visibility of all of the layers within the group, but you can still show/hide each layer individually. You can move layers from one group to another, but each layer can only be in one group. When you change a layer's group, the graphic views refresh because the group may have a different visibility state in the View Filter Manager.

Prerequisites:

  • Layers

To access the command:

  • Select Layer Group Manager in CAD > Layers to create, delete, rename layer groups, or change the group a layer is in.
  • Select New Layer to specify layer groups for new layers.
  • Select Layer Manager to add layers to groups.

To create and edit groups for layers:

  1. In the Layer Group Manager, click New.
  2. Type a group name in the box, and press [Enter].
  3. Click any existing group name and type to rename it.

Note: If you duplicate a layer group name, or name a layer group using the name of a default View Filter manager group (e.g., Raw Data, Flag, or Layers), the duplicate name is appended with an * so you can tell the groups apart.

To add a new layer to a group:

  • In the New Layer command, select an existing layer group to add the layer that you are creating to the group.

Note: You cannot select <New> from within the Layer group list because it is a modal dialog. You can only select from previously created layer groups.

To add existing layers to groups:

  • In the Layer Manager, select a group in the Group Layer column for each layer.

Note: If you add a layer to a group, and then delete the group, the layer's group property reverts to <None>.

Scenarios:

  • Layer groups are sorted numerically (in ascending order) and then in alphabetic order.
  • If you want to move specific layer groups in the list order, you can do so by naming them in the order you want them to appear:
    • The layers that you want to list first.
    • The layers that you want to list second.

Dependencies:

  • None
