stakeout

The act of putting a marker into the ground (or painting one on the ground) to denote the location of a coordinate or feature, or the extents of an area. Surveyors stakeout points to indicate where an alignment will run, where earth should be cut or filled, where infrastructure should be built, and where legal boundaries exist.
