Import MicroStation Files (.dgn)
MicroStation .dgn files are design files used in civil engineering, design, mapping, and architecture industries. At the bottom of the import pane, you can add a prefix to the layer (level) names, and specify whether to create a selection set comprised of the imported data.
Note: When you import CAD files, the imported objects retain their native properties. Many of these properties, however, are unneeded in this software so they are not visible or editable. Only their most common properties appear in the Properties pane. Depending on the object, these properties may include:
- name
- line or text style
- line style scale or text size
- color
- layer
- elevation
If you edit any of the linear CAD objects, such as arcs, lines, polylines, they are converted into linestrings and lose all of their native properties (they are replaced by linestring properties). If you export unedited CAD objects to a CAD file format, their native properties exist in the exported objects.

Data in the file |
How the data is handled when imported |
|
Arc |
This data is imported as an open CAD Ellipse or a CAD Arc (when minor and major axes are equal). |
|
B-spline |
This data is imported as a CAD Spline if the header denotes a spline (includes non-uniform and rational B-spline). |
|
Cell |
This data is imported as individual CAD Lines and other CAD objects. |
|
Color |
Each color is imported as the color it was mapped to in MicroStation or to 'bylayer' (for bylevel). |
|
Complex chain |
This data is imported as separate CAD Lines, 3D Polylines, Arcs, and Splines. |
|
Complex shape |
This data is imported as separate CAD Lines, 3D Polylines, Arcs, and Splines. |
|
Curve |
This data is imported as a CAD Spline. |
|
Ellipse |
This data is imported as a CAD Ellipse or a CAD Circle (when minor and major axes are equal). |
|
Dimensions |
The following dimension data is imported:
|
|
Level |
This data is imported as a layer. |
|
Line |
This data is imported as a CAD Line. |
|
Linestring |
This data is imported as a CAD 3D Polyline. |
|
Line style |
Each imported line style is mapped to one of eight pre-defined line styles or to 'bylayer' (for bylevel). |
|
Mesh |
This data is imported as a 3D polyface mesh, 3D polygon mesh, or 3D solid. This enables you to import meshes from other applications like AutoCAD. You can also export tunnel meshes from TBC and reimport them. |
|
Multiline |
This data is imported as a CAD Multi-line. |
|
Point string |
This data is imported as CAD Points (if detached) or a CAD 3D Polyline (if contiguous). |
|
Shape |
This data is imported as a CAD 3D Polyline. |
|
Shared cell and cell reference |
This data is imported as a CAD Block and CAD Block Reference. |
|
Tag |
This data is imported as CAD Text. |
|
Text |
This data is imported as CAD Text. |
|
Text node |
This data is imported as separate CAD Text objects. |
