Workflow: Prepare Corridor Data

Prepare data for a corridor to create high-accuracy surfaces for measurement and stakeout on controllers running Site Controller Software (SCS) or grade control operations on machine control systems. Also, create a variety of surfaces for corridor takeoff calculations.

Following are the basic steps for this workflow. For more detailed instructions, see Prepare Data (Organize and Clean Up).

Commands:

1.

Work through the steps for creating a corridor. See Workflow: Create a Corridor

2.

Clean up your imported data to fix typical problems found in CAD data.

Do this step to quickly eliminate unwanted objects, and then delete empty layers to minimize the information that you have to work with. The command also converts CAD lines into linestrings, joins lines, and sets an elevation on outlying objects (if you specify).

3.

Review your data using the View Filter Manager:

  • Toggle the Isolate Layer and Zoom Extents modes on and check each layer.
  • Identify unneeded data.

4.

Organize your data by layer:

  • Create new layers and rename existing layers.
  • Relayer remaining objects so they are logically segregated.
  • Group layers with similar data types.
  • Name layers so that they are clearly identifiable and so that it is obvious that they relate to the original ground, finished design, or utilities.

6.

Delete unneeded layers.

Watch the list of layers in the Layer Options pane to see which are removed.

At the top of the Layer Options dialog, click the Delete Empty Unprotected Layers icon.

7.

Manually create missing cross-sections:

  • Create stored cross-sections
  • Create stored cross-sections from CAD drawings
  • Digitize stored cross-sections

8.

Check your data for accuracy:

  • Review the elevation at any distance along a line.
  • Measure distances and angles between objects.
  • Review the attributes of any object.
