Import Image Files (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, .tif)

Import images to use them as background reference for CAD data or to overlay them onto surfaces to visualize how a job site's features relate to its topography.

Note: Once imported, you can right-click on an image (under Imported Files in the Project Explorer) and select Launch External Viewer to open the image in your default photo viewing program.

Settings

Coordinate system

Units

This setting only affects georeferenced image files, not unreferenced image files. Typically, when the file is parsed, the importer determines the units based on the coordinates it encounters (values lower than 360 are typically global; values higher than 360 are typically grid). Use this setting in the unlikely event that the values could be either northing and easting or latitude and longitude.

Global - Select this if your image units are in latitude and longitude values.

Grid - Select this if your image units are in northing and easting values, such as state plane coordinates. This is more common.

Image icons:

When you import image files, their icons can help you identify what type of data they contain.

  • i_raster image

Raster image

Vector image/PDF

Similarly, when you use the Add/Remove Image Boundaries command to mask portions of images, their icons change to indicate that part of the image has been hidden.

  • i_raster image clipped

Raster image to which boundaries have been added

  • i_vector image masked

Vector image to which boundaries have been added

Note: Once imported, you can right-click on an image (under Imported Files in the Project Explorer) and select Launch External Viewer to open the image in your default photo viewing program.
