Compute average

You can compute and store the averaged position for the same point if it has been measured more than once.

There are two methods available:

  • Points with same name

Trimble Access allows you to Store another when you store a point with the same name as an existing point, and you can average these points.

Points stored as control points cannot be used to compute an average using the Points with the same name method.

You can average two or more angles-only observations from two different known points only when they are measured and stored Points with same name.

  • Map selected points

If you measure and store points at the same location but give them different names, you can calculate a new averaged point with a new name using the Map selected points method.

To automatically average duplicate points, enable Auto average in the Duplicate point tolerance section of the survey style.

To compute an average

  1. Tap and select Cogo / Compute average, or select the points in the map and then tap and hold in the map and select Compute average.
  2. Select the Method.

    • For the Points with same name method:

      1. Select the Point name.

      2. In the Code field, enter the code to use for the averaged point.

The Trimble Access software averages all positions in the job with the same name, except control points. Once computed, the average point grid position appears, along with the standard errors for each ordinate.

Any Mean Turned Angle (MTA) observed to the point is ignored and the original observations are used to compute the average position.

    • For the Map selected points method:

      1. If you have not already selected the points in the map, select them by tapping each point or by drawing a box around them in the map.

      2. In the Averaged point name field, enter the name to use for the new averaged point.
      3. In the Code field, enter the code to use for the new averaged point.

The software averages the positions and the averaged point appears on the map.

  3. To include or exclude specific positions from the average computation, tap Details.

The residuals from the average position to each individual position are shown.

  4. To change the averaging method, tap Options. The default method is Weighted.

For more information on the available options and how the averaging is calculated, see Averaging.

  5. Tap Store.

If an averaged position for the point already exists in the database, the existing point is automatically deleted when the new average position is stored.

An averaged position is not automatically updated if the positions used to compute the average are changed. For example, if the calibration is updated, if observations are transformed or deleted, or if new observations of the same name are added, recompute the averaged position.
