Measuring polylines and polygons in Measure codes

When the Lines and codes field for the Feature Library file is set to Store polylines with codes on lines, you can measure multiple lines that have the same code without adding a numeric suffix to the code. Line or polygon codes (and attributes) are recorded with the polyline or polygon that is stored to the job.

Whether the code is also stored with the points that make up the polyline or polygon depends on whether the Measure codes button that is used to create the polyline or polygon also has a point code:

  • If the Measure codes button has only a line or polygon code then codes are not stored on the points that make up the polyline or polygon.

  • If the Measure codes button has a point code as well as a line or polygon code then codes are also stored on the points that make up the polyline or polygon.

This works differently to when the Lines and codes field for the Feature Library file is set to Create feature coded linework with codes on points. When that option is enabled codes and attributes are stored with each point on the line and you must use stringing to measure multiple lines that have the same code. Stringing adds a numeric suffix to the code.

To create a new polyline tap the New line softkey at the bottom of the Measure codes screen. Tap the Prev or Next softkeys to switch between existing lines.

The current line is highlighted in yellow. To add to the current line you can select existing points in the map, or measure new points using a line or polygon code.

To measure more than one polyline or polygon that uses the same feature code

  1. Tap and select Measure / Measure codes.

  2. If you have not already started the survey, start the survey. If you are using a conventional survey, put the instrument in tracking mode.
  3. Select the code group from the list or press A–Z to quickly switch to group pages 1–26.

You cannot use alphanumeric key shortcuts if the Multi-code button at the bottom of the form is enabled.

  4. To start measuring points on the first line feature:
    1. To measure the first point, tap the appropriate line or polygon code button.

You can also select code buttons using the keypad. If the button layout has three columns you can press the numeric key that corresponds to the code button, or use the arrow keys to navigate to the button and then press the Space key.

If Single tap to measure is not enabled, to select a different code you must tap the new code button to first highlight it and then tap it again to start measuring.

    2. In the Measure topo or Measure point screen, measure and store the point.

Once the measurement is stored, the Measure codes form appears, ready for the next measurement.

To automatically start measuring from the Measure codes screen, tap Options in the Measure codes screen and enable Auto measure. To change the auto store settings, in the Measure topo screen tap Options and then clear the View before storage check box, or in the Measure point screen tap Options and then select the Auto store point check box.

    3. To add subsequent points to the first line, select points in the map or tap the same code button again or press the Enter key.

The line or polygon is drawn on the map and stored to the job as you add points to the line.

  5. To start adding or measuring points on a different line feature of the same code type:

    1. Tap the New line softkey. In the map, the previous line is no longer highlighted.

    2. Measure and store the point.

If the Auto measure and Auto store options are not enabled, you will need to tap Measure and then tap Store.

    3. To add or measure subsequent points on the second line, select points in the map or tap the same code button again or press the Enter key.

The line or polygon is drawn on the map as you add and measure points.

  6. To switch between the two line features in progress, tap the Prev or the Next softkey.

The selected feature is highlighted on the map, and the map shows a dotted line from the end of the feature to the current point, enabling you to visually check how the line will be extended when you add the current point and to ensure you have selected the correct feature.

  7. To create a polygon when using a line feature type, tap in the map to select the start point again. Polygon feature codes automatically close on the start point.

When measuring multiple lines at once, tap the Prev or the Next softkey to switch between existing lines. To start a new line, tap New line.

Adding and removing points from polylines and polygons

You can easily add and remove points from a polyline or polygon, either when in the Measure codes screen or when viewing the map at any time.

  • To insert one point into a polyline, select the point and the polyline in the map. Tap and hold on the polyline near the segment where you want to insert the point, and then select Insert point. Use the same process to insert a point into a polygon.

  • To remove a point from a polyline, select the point in the map, and then from the tap and hold menu select Remove point. Use the same process to remove a point from a polygon.
