Project templates
The project template defines the feature library that the project uses.
The default templates installed with Penmap Project Manager and the Penmap field software are Example and Quickstart. These templates are designed for initial tests and simple data collection.
You can add project templates to the Trimble Connect projects by:
- Creating a template from an existing template
- Creating a new empty template using the integrated template generator in Penmap Project Manager

A fully functional template includes the following information:
- Objects or features
- Attributes of objects or features
- Symbols
- Layers and line styles
- iFeature definitions
You can add feature definitions by:
- Uploading a shapefile containing an existing GIS & mapping schema definition
- Creating a new GIS & mapping schema definition using the schema editor in Penmap Project Manager
- Adding iFeature definitions using the iFeature editor in Penmap Project Manager
You must add iFeature definitions to be able to collect iFeatures with attributes in the field. If you upload an existing schema or create a new schema definition without adding iFeature definitions, then field users will only be able to collect numbered points with codes.
If you are going to create or edit a schema, you must do that before adding iFeature definitions to the template.
To create a template based on source data that matches the backend system is a complex task. It is important to think through the information required, and the layout of objects and symbols used which will be imported to the field task. It could be necessary to have different project templates for different field tasks.

- Select the Trimble Connect project in Penmap Project Manager.
- Click Settings.
- Select the Penmap Templates tab.
- Click Create.
- Enter the name for the new template.
- In the Duplicated from field, select the existing template to copy.
- Click Create.
The iFeature Editor opens, showing the iFeatures defined in the template. Edit the template as required. To save your changes, click OK.
The new template appears in the Available Penmap Templates list.

- Select the Penmap Templates tab in the Trimble Connect project settings screen and click Create.
- Enter the name for the new template.
- Click Create.
The new template appears in the Available Penmap Templates list.
At this point, the template does not have any object or feature definition.
