Validate Design Issues
You can validate design VCL files directly within the 3D Viewer (under Data Packages) prior to dispatching them to Earthworks devices. This feature includes a targeted set of validation rules that mirror the edge-case checks performed natively by Earthworks upon file receipt. After validation, the issues are generated and displayed in the data panel. For each issue group, a clear explanation is offered, together with an actionable recommendation and the layer names containing the reported objects.
Validations & Guidance Matrix
The validation engine's rule set will expand continuously in subsequent releases.

Issue group (title) |
Issue fix |
|---|---|
|
File extension |
Save or export using one of the allowed formats (.vcl; .trb). |
|
File size |
Remove duplicate or unused surfaces and excess detail, then save again and confirm the file size under the limit of 150 MB. |
|
Line segmentation |
Join or rebuild each polyline so it's a single continuous line instead of several separate pieces. |
|
Arc segment (full circle) |
Full circles cannot be triangulated. Bisect the circle into two semicircular arcs. |
|
Near-zero length lines |
Delete the flagged segments or convert them into point objects, as their length falls below the 0.001 m threshold and they are effectively noise. |
|
Excessive geometry horizontal spread |
Remove or move stray objects far from the job. |
|
Zero surface area |
Delete unused or failed surfaces, or rebuild the surface from valid boundary breaklines. |
|
Zero planar surface area |
Fix vertical or near-vertical scraps that have no meaningful footprint in the plan. |
|
Excessive surface density |
Coarsen the surface mesh: increase maximum triangle size, reduce point density on flat areas, or use a simpler build method. If the surface was imported from dense LIDAR, thin or grid, subsample the source before building the design surface. |
|
Zero elevation lines |
Set all linework on the real design elevation. |
|
Duplicate geometry |
For reported IDs, delete the extra copy of the line or point (the validator keeps the first instance and lists the duplicate). |
