Setting up the tripod and instrument
A stable setup is critical for high-precision measurements. Ensure that you use a high-quality tripod with a head made of steel, aluminum, or equivalent material. Avoid the use of tripod heads made of fiberglass or other composite materials. To securely mount the instrument, Trimble recommends the Gitzo Series 3 tripod with a custom head and 5/8” bell connector (P/N 90573-TR).
Setting up the tripod
-
Adjust the legs on the tripod to the required height. Turn the locks on the tripod legs just enough so they can be extended equally and then tighten the locks so they are secure.
-
Spread the tripod legs wide apart so they lock out for increased stability.
-
Set up on a level, stable surface when possible.
-
Ensure the tripod head is visibly level and if necessary, adjust the leg heights.
Setting up the instrument
-
Ensure the tripod is stable and the head is visibly level before connecting the instrument.
-
Place the instrument on the tripod head with one hand on the handle and one hand on the base.
-
Carefully center the instrument on the tripod head.
-
With one hand still on the handle, secure the instrument by screwing the tripods bell connector into the 5/8” threaded connection at the base of the instrument.
-
Ensure the bell connector is threaded in completely, but do not over-tighten. The instrument is now ready for operation.
