Merge Duplicate Points on Import

When you import a new data file into a project that includes a point with the same name as an existing point in the project, depending on your project configuration (see below) and the type of file you are importing, the Merge Points dialog may display showing all duplicate points. In the dialog, a check mark identifies each point pair that will be merged into a single point with the same name that includes the existing and new observations.

Optionally, you can remove the check mark from any duplicate point to specify that the duplicate point be imported as a new point with the same name as the existing point.

You can also select to rename a duplicate point using a variety of options. Instead of being merged with the existing project point, the duplicated point is imported with the new name. See "To rename duplicate points on import" later in this topic.

Note: When you import a different version of a file that has already been imported into the project (for example, you are importing data for the second day of a 2-day survey), depending on the file type and the merge settings for that file type, duplicate points may be automatically merged, regardless of the merge options specified in the Project Setting dialog as described below. In this case, the Merge Points dialog is not displayed. For more information, see Import Multiple File Versions.

To specify how duplicate points are merged on import:

  1. Prior to import, select Project Settings in the Quick Access Toolbarto display the Project Settings dialog.
  2. Select Computations > Point Tolerances in the left navigation pane.
  3. In the Merge on Import section, select the appropriate option in the Merge options drop-down list.
    • By Point Tolerance - Select this option to specify that duplicate points be merged if their horizontal and vertical coordinates are within the tolerances specified in the Quality sections of the Point Tolerance pane. The lower quality of the two points (Survey, Mapping, or Unknown) determines which quality tolerances to use.
    • By Point Tolerance x 3 - Select this option to specify that duplicate points be merged if their horizontal and vertical coordinates are within the tolerances specified in the Quality sections of the Point Tolerance pane, multiplied by a factor of 3. For example, if 0.020 m is specified for a quality tolerance, 0.060 m is used for the merge tolerance. The lower quality of the two points (Survey, Mapping, or Unknown) determines which quality tolerances to use.
    • By Custom Tolerance - Select this option to specify that duplicate points be merged if their horizontal and vertical coordinates are within the tolerances you specify in the Horizontal tolerance and Vertical tolerance fields, regardless of point quality.

Tip: If you want to force the Merge Points dialog to always display when you import duplicate points, select the By Custom Tolerance option and set the horizontal or vertical custom tolerance to 0.000.

    • By Station Point - Select this option to specify that duplicate points be merged in cases where at least one of the two points is occupied by a total station or a base station (referred to as a "station point"), regardless of position tolerances. When this option is selected, the Merge Points dialog is not displayed during import.

Note: The By Station Point option is the merge algorithm that was used exclusively in earlier versions of Trimble Business Center.

  4. Click OK.

You are now ready to import points into your project. If the Merge Points dialog is displayed during import, verify that duplicate point pairs are selected correctly for merging and make changes if necessary.

To rename duplicate points on import:

  1. In the Merge Points dialog, uncheck the Merge check box for each duplicate point you want to rename. Or, uncheck the Merge check box at the top of the column to uncheck all duplicate points.
  2. Check the Rename points check box in the lower-left area of the dialog.
  3. Select the appropriate rename option:
    • Rename manually - Select this option to manually rename individual duplicate points. For each unchecked duplicate point you want to rename, enter a new name in the Point Pair column. Click Preview to see the edited point names in the Preview column.
    • Add prefix or Add suffix - Select one of these options to add specific text to the beginning or end of multiple duplicate point names. Enter the text you want to apply in the Rename field. Then use Ctrl + click or Shift + click (click the left-most cells) to select the rows for the unchecked duplicate points to which you want to add the text. (If you don't select any rows, the text is added to all unchecked duplicate points.) Click Preview to see the edited point names in the Preview column.
    • Add constant - Select this option to add a specific constant value to multiple duplicate point names that are already numeric. For example, if you select to add a constant value of 10 to a point named 3, the edited name will be 13; for point 106, the edited name will be 116. Enter the constant value you want to use in the Rename field. Then use Ctrl + click or Shift + click (click the left-most cells) to select the rows for the unchecked duplicate points to which you want to add the constant value. (If you don't select any rows, the constant value is added to all unchecked duplicate points that are numeric.) Click Preview to see the edited point names in the Preview column.

      Notes:
      - When you make a multiple row selection, only the duplicate points within the row selection that do not include a check in the Merge check box will be renamed.
      - The total number of rows currently selected is displayed in the lower-right area of the dialog.

  4. Repeat step 3 using that same or different options as necessary to ensure all duplicate points are being imported correctly.
  5. Optionally, check the View Renamed Point List check box to display the Renamed Point List report in your default browser when you click the Import button.
  6. When you are done, click Import.
