Import Multiple File Versions

If data collection for a survey is performed over multiple days, you may need to import different versions of a DC (.dc), JOB (.job), or JXL (.jxl) file into a project in Trimble Business Center. To help you manage this process, the software allows you to choose whether to merge data contained in the newly imported version of the file with the data that has already been imported into the project, or import it as a separate file. If you choose to merge the data, you can further specify what to do when the same objects are contained in both files (for example, a point with the same name): save the existing version of the object already in the project and discard the new version, or save the newly imported version of the object and discard the existing version.

When the software detects you are importing a different version of a DC, JOB, or JXL file that has already been imported into the project, one of the following occurs:

  • If you have not preconfigured the file importer to use a specific option for merging data, the Specify Option dialog displays allowing you to specify an option (see below).
  • If you have preconfigured the file importer to use a specific merge option, that option is applied and the Specify Option dialog is not displayed. For instructions on preconfiguring a file importer for merging duplicate files, see Preconfigure Options for Importing Multiple File Versions.

If the Specify Option dialog displays, select the appropriate option and click Import.

Option

Description

Disable merge

Select this option to import the file as a new version of the file already in the project, resulting in multiple versions of the file and multiple versions of any duplicate objects.

During import, the Merge Points dialog displays if both of the following are true:

  • The newly imported version of the file includes one or more points with the same name as existing points in the project.
  • You selected one of the three "merge-by-tolerance" options in the Computations > Point Tolerances > Merge on Import section of the Project Settings dialog, and the specified tolerance was exceeded by one or more duplicate point pairs.
Overwrite office edits

Select this option to merge data in the imported file with data in the existing version of the file.

If the same object (for example, a point) exists in both versions of the file, the newly imported version of the object is the one that is saved. This overwrites any office edits that might have been made to the object between imports.

If a point created for an existing object that is being overwritten includes an office-entered dependent object (for example, an office entered coordinate), the existing point is automatically merged with the newly created point, allowing the dependent object to be re-associated with the newly created point. (See note below.)

During import, the Merge Points dialog displays if both of the following are true:

  • The newly imported version of the file includes one or more points with the same names as points that already exist in the project but were not imported with the earlier version of the file (for example, they were entered in the office).
  • You selected one of the three "merge-by-tolerance" options in the Computations > Point Tolerances > Merge on Import section of the Project Settings dialog, and the specified tolerance was exceeded by one or more duplicate point pairs.
Preserve office edits

Select this option to merge data in the imported file with data in the existing version of the file.

If the same object exists in both versions of the file, the existing version of the object is the one that is saved. This preserves any office edits that might have been made to the object between imports.

Notes:
- Only DC, JOB, JXL, and NGS data sheet file importers allow you to select merge options for versioned files as described in this topic. If you select to import a new file version for a file type other than one of these, the newer version of the file is imported as if the Disable merge option described above was selected.
- If there is more than one version of a file already in the project, the Overwrite office edits and Preserve office edits options will not be available in the Specify Option dialog. To merge data using one of these two options, you must first delete all but one existing version of the file from the project, then re-import the new version.
