Define and Edit Strata for a Corridor

Use the Define Corridor Strata command to define the layers of earthen material that exist along the corridor. Then use the Create Corridor Boring Log command to define the thickness or depth of each stratum. Alternatively select existing surfaces to define the thickness of each stratum.

The corridor strata can then be:

  • used to determine the volume of each material that is cut from the surface in a Corridor Mass Haul analysis.
  • used as a target surface in a corridor template definition.
  • selected as a surface in the Cross-Section View.

Warning: It is highly recommended that you do not use strata surfaces that cross. Doing so will produce inconsistent results between the cross-section volumes and the surface-to-surface volumes.
Note: Surfaces created from strata have the Adjust for arc/chord property set to No by default.
Note: The top surface for strata must match the existing ground of the corridor for strata to be applied.

Prerequisites:

To access the command:

The Define Corridor Strata dialog displays.

Options:

  • In the Strata definition method list, select how you will define the material layers.
  • In the Original ground field, select the corridors original ground surface.
  • Specify each stratum that occurs below the Original Surface by selecting a material. The materials must be predefined in the Material and Site Improvement Manager's Project library to appear in the list.
  • To define the stratum thickness using existing surfaces rather than boring logs, select the surface in the surface column. Each material in the stratum must have a surface assigned.
  • To change the order of the various strata, highlight a row and click Move Up or Move Down.
  • To delete a stratum, highlight the row and select Delete from the context menu.

Dependencies:

  • Make sure the Original ground surface selected for the corridor is identical to the Original ground surface selected in the Define Corridor Strata dialog.

Warning: If the original ground specified in the Corridor Strata definition does not match the original ground specified for the corridor, the corridor strata will not be used. The native material specified for the corridor will be used instead.

Scenarios:

  • If an additional stratum is added to the corridor strata after boring logs have been created the additional stratum is given a zero thickness in the Boring Log Stratum Settings.
  • If a stratum is removed from the corridor strata after boring logs have been created the stratum will be removed from each boring log strata.
  • If surfaces are used to define the stratum thickness and these surfaces cross or are out of order, the material below the surface lowest in the list is used. See Understanding Corridor Strata.
