Create Points from CAD Objects

Create points based on a CAD objects imported into your project. The points can then be exported for stakeout in the field.

Prerequisites:

  • One or more CAD objects in your project

To access the command:

Do one of the following:

  • Select Create Points from CAD in CAD > Points.
  • Right-click Points in the Project Explorer and select Create Points from CAD in the context menu.

To create points from a CAD object:

  1. In the Create Points from CAD command pane, click in the Selection field and select the CAD object from which you want to create points.

Click the Options button for additional selection options.

  2. Select the appropriate options for creating points:
    • Line end points - Creates a point at the end of each selected linear object.
    • Line mid points - Creates a point in the middle of each selected linear object.
    • Segment end points - Creates a point at the end of each selected line segment.
    • Arc/Circle centers - Creates a point in the center of each selected arc or circle object.
    • CAD points and mesh vertices - Creates a point on top of each selected CAD point or mesh vertex.
    • Insertion points - Creates a point at the insertion points for selected text, images, and so on.
    • Intersections - Creates a point at each intersection of two or more line segments.

Note: When two CAD lines (with either the same or different elevations) intersect planimetrically, a 2D point (with no elevation) is created at the planimetric intersection point.

    • Centroids of closed lines - Creates a point at the center of mass (centroid) of a closed line.
  3. In the Options box, do one of the following:
    • Select the Create grid-only points check box to specify that the new points be created as grid points (points with X, Y, and Z grid coordinates only; no global or local latitude and longitude coordinates).
    • De-select the Create grid-only points check box and select the quality for the points in the Point quality drop-down list.
  4. In the Starting point ID field, enter a name (point ID) for the first point to be created.

Subsequent points will be named the same, but incremented by 1 (for example, if the starting point is 1000, the second point is 1001, the third point is 1002, and so on).

  5. Optionally, select a different layer in the Layer list on which to create the points, or select <<New Layer>> to create a new layer for the points.
  6. Optionally, type a feature code in the Feature Code field or click the Browse button to select a feature code to apply to the new points.
  7. When you are done, click Close, or click Apply to create more points.
