Import Keyed-In Total Station Data

This topic explains how to use the Total Station Editor to do the following:

  • Edit total station data that has already been imported into your project.
  • Import total station data into your project by manually typing (keying) it in while referencing a spreadsheet or other type of document containing the data.

To view and edit existing total station data:

You an use the Total Station Editor to edit the following items for stations that have already been imported into the project:

  • Instrument and target heights
  • Station and backsight coordinates
  • Feature codes
  1. Do either of the following to display the Total Station Editor dialog:
    • Right-click the appropriate imported job file nested beneath the Import Files node in the Project Explorer and select Total Station Editor in the context menu.
    • Select Total Station Editor in Survey > Optical. Then, in the Select Total Station Files dialog, select the job file you want edit.
  2. In the Total Station Editor dialog, expand nodes as necessary to view station setup and observation data.
  3. If necessary, make edits to any of the editable values.

Note: If the position for a point is supplied by a coordinate and you change its setup type from single- or multiple-backsight to resection, the software will be able to determine the point's position based on either the coordinate or the computed resection. Because it will use the coordinate by default, instead of the computed resection, the position will not change based on the computed resection. To ensure that the point's position is based on the computed resection, click Yes in the Resolve Conflict message dialog that displays to specify that the status of the coordinate be changed to "Enabled as check." This status will force the software to use the computed resection to compute the point's position rather than the coordinate. In addition, this status, unlike "Disabled," ensures out-of-tolerance flags are displayed as applicable.

  4. When you are done, click OK.

If you made any edits, the project is automatically re-computed.

To import new keyed-in total station data:

  1. Select Total Station Editor in Survey > Optical.

If a job file has already been imported into the project, the Select Total Station Files dialog displays.

  2. If the Select Total Station Files dialog displays, select Keyed-In Total Station File and click OK.
  3. In the Station Setup dialog, do either of the following:
    • Click Station Setup to key in values for a station setup. Proceed directly to step 4.
    • Click Resection to key in values for a resection. Proceed directly to step 5.
  4. To key in values for a station setup, complete the dialogs as follows:
    1. In the Station Setup: Instrument Setup dialog, enter a new point name or the name of a point that already exists in the project and complete the other fields as appropriate.

If you enter an existing point name, the coordinate for the point is automatically entered in the coordinate fields, which you can view by selecting the Key in coordinate check box.

If you enter a new point name, you are prompted to enter a coordinate for the point when you leave the field. You can also specify whether the new point is a control point. If you choose not to enter the coordinate, deselect the Key in coordinate check box.

When you are done, click Next.

    2. In the Station Setup: Backsight Setup dialog, enter a new point name or the name of a point that already exists in the project and complete the other fields as appropriate. If necessary, select a different measurement method in the Method drop-down list.

If you enter an existing point name, the azimuth is automatically computed and displayed in the Azimuth (Computed) field.

If you enter a new point name, either enter the azimuth in the Azimuth (Keyed-In) field or select the Key in coordinate check box and enter the coordinate for the point. You can also specify whether the new point is a control point.

When you are done, click Next.

    3. In the Station Setup: Manual Backsight Observation dialog, enter the horizontal angle, vertical angle, and slope distance as appropriate.

The fields available depend on your selection in the Method drop-down list in the previous dialog.

When you are done, click Store to save the new station setup in your project.

The new station setup displays in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog.

    4. To key in one or more additional side shot observations for the new station setup, click the Add Observation button in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog.
    5. To key in an additional station setups, click the Add Station button in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog, click the Station Setup button, and repeat step 4.
  5. To key in values for a resection, complete the dialogs as follows:
    1. In the Resection: Instrument Setup dialog, enter a new point name or the name of a point that already exists in the project and complete the other fields as appropriate. In the Resection type drop-down list, select the measurement type for the backsight.

If you select Standard in the Resection type drop-down list, three backsight observations are required. If you select Helmert, two backsight observations are required.

When you are done, click Next.

    2. In the Resection: Backsight # 1 - Face 1 dialog, enter a new point name or the name of a point that already exists in the project and complete the other fields as appropriate. If necessary, select a different measurement method in the Method drop-down list.

If the observation is a side shot instead of backsight, deselect the Backsight check box. If a face 2 observation has been made, select the Face 2 check box.

    3. In the Manual Backsight: Backsight # 1 dialog, enter the horizontal angle, vertical angle, and slope distance as appropriate.

The fields available depend on your selection in the Method drop-down list in the previous dialog.

When you are done, click Next.

If you selected the Face 2 check box in the Resection: Backsight # 1 - Face 1 dialog, the Resection: Backsight # 1 - Face 2 dialog displays.

    4. If the Resection: Backsight # 1 - Face 2 dialog displays, repeat the procedure described in steps 5b and 5c.
    5. Repeat this procedure (steps 5b though 5d) to enter values for the remaining backsight observations (a total of three for a Standard resection or two for a Helmert resection).

If you want to key in additional observations, select the Measure another check box in the last dialog instead of the Store button. The Store button changes to a Next button, which you can click to proceed.

When you are done, click Store to save the new station setup in your project.

The new station setup displays in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog.

    6. To key in an additional resection setups, click the Add Station button in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog, click the Resection button, and repeat this procedure.
  6. To delete a station or observation, select it in the Total Station Editor - Keyed_in Total Station File dialog and click the appropriate Delete button, or right-click and select Delete.

Note that if you click the Add Observation button, the new observation will be added to the bottom of the Observations list for the last station in the list.

  7. When you are done, click OK.

    The project is automatically re-computed.
