Import STAR*NET Files (.dat)

To import level data contained in a MicroSurvey STAR*NET (.dat) file, you use one of the two STAR*NET custom importers, which are predefined in the Import Format Editor:

  • STARxNET Level Data - Select this importer when each Observation record in the file includes only a backsight point ID , foresight point ID, and delta elevation.
  • STARxNET with HZDist - Select this importer when each Observation record in the file includes a backsight point ID , foresight point ID, delta elevation, and horizontal distance.

To import STAR*NET files:

  1. Select Import in Home > Data Exchange.

    The Importcommand pane displays.

  2. Do one of the following:
    • Select the folder containing the STAR*NET (.dat) data files in the Import Folder drop-down list.
    • Click the Import button to browse to the folder containing the STAR*NET (.dat) data file.

The files contained in the selected folder display in the Select File(s) area.

  3. Select the STAR*NET .dat file(s) you want to import.
  4. Optionally, change the layer on which to display the imported level data in the Settings section of the command pane.
  5. Click Import.

The Import Format Editor displays with the STARxNET Level Data importer selected by default.

The File View located at the bottom of the dialog displays the contents of the file selected for import. The Import Preview shows how the data will be formatted when it is imported into TBC. To specify the number of rows from the .dat file to display in the two views, click the drop-down button displayed alongside the Read File button and make your selection. Or, use the drop-down to select to open the .dat file in a text editor.

  6. If the observation data includes horizontal distances, select the STARxNET with HZDist importer.

Note: If you expect to use the STARxNET with HZDist importer on a regular basis, you can uncheck the check box for the STARxNET Level Data so it is no longer selected by default when you import STAR*NET files.

  7. Click the Import button.

The Level Editor displays, allowing you to further examine and edit the STAR*NET level data before importing it. For instructions on using the Level Editor, see the "To get started" section of View and Edit Level Data.

After the import is complete, you can view complete information about the imported level data, by selecting Home > Reports > Level Report.
