Lightening protection of fixed antennas

Trimble recommends using a lightning surge protection equipment on all fixed antennas. This device will reduce the risk of electrical shock to the radio that could occur if lightning struck the antenna, the antenna mast, or an object close to the antenna. When installing a fixed antenna on a metallic mast, Trimble recommends installing the antenna on the mast side, not too close to the mast, so that the top of the mast protects the antenna from a lightning strike. The mast must be properly grounded on the lower end as per applicable local regulatory standards for lightning strike protection.

Trimble recommends lightning surge protector devices that cover at least the 403 MHz to 470 MHz frequency range and allow a maximum transmission power greater than 1 W. The device installation must follow the supplier’s recommendations.

Trimble products damaged by a lightning strike will not be covered by a warranty repair.
