To complete a standard station setup

Select Station setup to complete a standard station setup to one backsight, or if you are performing a traverse type survey.

  1. Tap and select Measure or Stakeout / <survey style> / Station setup.
    1. When prompted, use the electronic level to level the instrument. Tap Accept.
    2. Set the corrections associated with the instrument.

If the Corrections screen does not appear, tap Options and enter the correction information.

    3. To configure default instrument coordinates, and default point names, heights, and azimuth settings for the instrument point and backsight point, tap Options. See Station setup options.
    4. Enter the instrument point name and the instrument height. See Station coordinates and instrument height.
    5. Tap Accept.
  2. Set up the backsight:

    1. Enter the Backsight point name and the Backsight height.
    2. If there are no known coordinates for the point, key in an azimuth. If you do not know the azimuth, you can enter an arbitrary value and then edit the azimuth record later, in review. A null azimuth value will affect the software's ability to perform traverse calculations.

If your survey practice does not require you to measure to the backsight, tap Options and clear the Measure backsight check box.

  3. Select the measurement method in the Method field:

    • Angles and distance – measure horizontal and vertical angles and slope distance
    • Averaged observations – measure horizontal and vertical angles and slope distance for a predefined number of observations
    • Angles only – measure horizontal and vertical angles
    • H. Angle only – measure horizontal angle only
    • Angle offset – measure the slope distance first, the instrument can then be repointed and then measure the horizontal and vertical angles
    • H. Angle offset – measure the vertical angle and slope distance first, the instrument can then be repointed and then measure the horizontal angle
    • V. Angle offset – measure the horizontal angle and slope distance first, the instrument can then be repointed and then measure the vertical angle
    • Distance offset – enter the left/right, in/out or V.Dist offset from the target to the object when a point is inaccessible and then measure horizontal and vertical angles and slope distance to the offset object
  4. If you selected an offset method, tap Options and then:
    • To set the perspective from which objects are offset, tap Options and change the settings in the Servo/Robotic group box. For more information, see Servo/Robotic.

    • If using Autolock technology, select the Autolock off for offsets check box to automatically disable Autolock technology for the offset measurement and then re‑enable it after the measurement.

You can also configure these settings in the Instrument screen of the survey style. See Instrument configuration.

  5. If you have enabled the Advanced Geodetic check box in the Cogo settings screen, you can apply an additional scale factor to every conventional station setup. All measured horizontal distances are adjusted by this scale factor. To configure the scale factor settings, tap Options.

  6. Sight the center of the backsight target and then tap Measure.

If the View before storage check box is selected in the survey style, the software shows the residuals for the station setup, which shows the difference between the known position and the observed position of the backsight point. To change the display, tap the view display button on the left of the measurement information.

  7. If Auto face 1/face 2 is enabled in the survey style or Options screen:
    1. Tap Store to store the face 1 observation. The instrument changes face.
    2. Sight the center of the backsight target and then tap Measure.
  8. Tap Store.
