Adding symbology

When creating a form template, use the Style tab of the Template Editor to add symbology options to your layers to enable at-a-glance understanding of features on the map. The symbols display on the map in Map Viewer, as well as in TerraFlex in the Home screen template buttons, the Form list, the filter list, and the Map view.

You can also enable attribute-based symbology, to dynamically change the symbol's color based on an attribute value in the form.

The Color Picker enables you to select from a full range of HEX or RGB colors, or choose from a predefined set of colors.

Symbology options can also be set for an existing template in the Edit Layer window; see Editing a layer's symbology below.

Once a form template has been created, the style can not be changed and the Styles tab is not available when editing the form template. Only the Layers Style can be changed; see Editing a layer's symbology below.

To add symbology options when creating a new template:

  1. In the Template editor, select the Styles tab.

  2. Depending on the Geometry Type of your form template (Point, Line, or Area), do one of the following:

    • For a Point form template:

      1. Select the Symbol Type; there are three options of symbols for point forms — Geometric, Feature, or Customizable.

The Customizable option enables you to enter a label (maximum two characters) to display in the selected shape (square, circle, or octagon) that helps you to identify the asset being mapped. For example, use WP for Water Pump, or MH for Manhole; this is a useful option for assets that may not have a geometric or feature styled symbol that works well for them

      2. Select the required Shape.

      3. If you selected Customizable, enter a Text label (maximum two characters) to display in the selected shape.

      4. Select the Fill Color and Outline Color. Note for the Customizable option, there is no Fill Color option.

    • For a Line form template:

      1. Select the Line Style — Solid, Dashed, or Dotted.

      2. Select the Line Color.

    • For an Area form template:

      1. Select the Line Style for the area — Solid, Dashed, or Dotted.

      2. Select the Line Color and the Fill Color.

      3. Set the Fill Opacity as needed between 0% (no fill) and 100%.

  3. If you select Enable attribute-based symbology, select a Choice or a Coded Choice field from your template, and then add a color override for each item in the Choice/Coded Choice Field list. When the user collects or updates a form, the color of the symbol will change depending on the value set in the Choice or Coded Choice field.

Attribute-based symbology cannot be used with a multiple choice field; only standard Choice and Coded Choice fields are supported.

  4. To save your changes click Save at the top of the screen.

Editing a layer's symbology

Symbology options are set when a template is first created in the Template Editor. To change any of the symbology options, including enabling or disabling attribute-based symbology, after the template is created, right-click the layer in the Data list and then select Edit layer.

New symbology options are only available on templated layers. Layers without templates only have the extended color picker option.
