Divide a Line Using the CAD Command Line
Use the Divide Line command alias on the CAD Command Line to divide a polyline, linestring, or other line object into multiple segments defined by a specified number of segments or by segment length.
Note: The pane-based versions of the CAD Command Line commands may have additional options not offered on the CAD Command Line, e.g., the options to create CAD points or orthogonal lines at each division are available only in the pane-based command.

- Line to divide
To divide lines from the CAD Command Line:
- Press [F3] or click the
icon on the Status Bar to open the CAD Command Line.
- Type div or DIV at the command prompt, and press [Enter].
- Skip the Layer, Color, and/or Line style lists below the command prompt; they do not apply to this operation.
- Based on the Line mode highlighted at the prompt, pick the line to divide in a supported view (Plan, Sheet, 3D, Cross-section, or Cutting Plane), and press [Enter], or enter the keyboard shortcut for another mode: The options are:
- Line - Type L to change the target type to Line mode so you can divide en entire line. Then pick the line.
- Segment - Type S to change the target type to Segment mode so you can divide a segment rather than an entire line. Then pick a segment.
The command remembers the last mode used the next time you run the command.
- Based on the Number mode highlighted at the prompt, enter the number of segments to divide the line into, or enter the keyboard shortcut for another mode: The options are:
- Number - Enter N and then the number of segments to divide the line/segments into.
- Length - Enter L and then the 2D length for each segment (from the start of the line; the final segment (remainder) will be any length < the length you specify). To use a 3D length, enter 3D and then the slope length you want to divide the line/segments by.
All of the new lines remain selected. The command remembers the last modes used the next time you run the command.
- To divide another line, press [Spacebar] to rerun the command.
