Understanding Material Processing Sites

Material processing sites are used to convert a material cut from the natural surface or borrowed from a corridor mass haul borrow site, into material that can be used as fill, or in the finished corridor surface. Material processes are created in the Material and Site Improvement Manager. See Create a Material Process in the Material and Site Improvement Manager. This material process is then selected when creating a material processing site. The corridor mass haul determines when the material process is required to produce the optimal results. Also see the Workflow for Processing Materials.

Processing sites in a Corridor Mass Haul Analysis

The output material from a material process is created when:

  • the Corridor Mass Haul Analysis determines that the output material is needed.
  • there is sufficient input material at a borrow site or cut from the surface.
  • there are haul roads between the source and the destination.

In the Corridor Mass Haul Analysis command and/or Properties pane for the analysis, these properties must be set to force the use of processed materials:

Corridor Mass Haul Analysis Command

Properties Pane

Respect defines fill materials

Generic fill = No

Use defined borrow/waste sites

Use default earthwork sites = No

Respect earthwork site capacities (enabled)

Respect capacities = Yes

Note: In addition, the processed materials must be assigned in the corridor template to be used. If there are multiple material processing sites, they will all be considered in the optimized analysis based on haul distance and cost.

In the Corridor Mass Haul Diagram a processing site icon shows the amount of material going in and coming out of the processing site at the station where the haul road from the source connects to the alignment. A summary of the amount of material processed and produced at each processing site appears at the end of the alignment. You can also view this information in the Material Processing Report.

Defining the fill material

If you want specific fill material used for the corridor define the fill material:

  • in the Fill material box in the corridor properties.
  • in the template editor using the Material above list.

If the Fill material setting for the corridor is set to undefined and there is not fill material specified in the template editor, any fill can be used for the corridor and the material process at the processing site may not be required.

If the Generic Fill setting for the Corridor Mass Haul Analysis is set to yes, any fill can be used for the corridor even when you have specified a fill material using one of the above methods. The material process at the processing site may not be required.
