Save a File Remotely

Make projects available to your colleagues by saving them to a shared folder hosted by an external service, such as Trimble Connect, the Connected Community (TCC), or Bentley ProjectWise. When you save a file remotely, you are essentially making a copy of the file that is saved locally. Before you can save a file to an external service, you should set up a user profile for your external service.

Note: When you save a project remotely to TCC or ProjectWise, only the .vce file is saved; supporting files that are usually stored in the project's subfolder are not saved with the project. This is not the case for saving remotely to Connect; you can choose to save the files in the project subfolder as well. For Connect, saving project subfolder files remotely works only if the Use project subfolders option is checked in Options > File Locations. For additional details, see Maintain Project Files Remotely.

Prerequisites:

  • Login credentials for the licensed external service.

To save a file remotely:

  1. Do either of the following, depending on the workflow, to display the Save File Remotely dialog:
    • Select Save File Remotely to save the current VCE (.vce) project file to an external location.
    • Click the Browse external service locations button located to the right of the File name field in the Export pane to save the export file(s) to an external location.
  2. In the External service profile list, do either of the following:
    • If you have already created an applicable external service login profile (using the Options dialog), select it in the External service profile drop-down list.
    • If you have not already created an applicable external service profile, click the Manage service profiles in Options button located to the right of the External service profile drop-down list. Then, in the Options dialog, create an appropriate login profile as described in Log In to External Services.
  3. If prompted, enter your login credentials and click Sign In.

Note: If you are signed in to Trimble Connect and want to also save your VCE project's subfolder (imported data, images, and other files within the project folder), check the Include associated VCE project files box. This will save a complete set of the project's files. This option is hidden for other external services. However, Include associated files works only if the Use project subfolders option is checked in the File Locations section of the Options dialog.

  4. Click Save.

    The file is saved remotely.

Note: If a project file/subfolder of the same name already exists in Trimble Connect, you are prompted to duplicate or replace them. If you replace them, the files are versioned in Connect so you can return to older versions of the file. If only either the project file or subfolder exists, an auto-incremented pair of the file and folder are saved so the names match.
