Create Point Labels

Create single- or multi-line labels for points using predefined point label styles.

After it is created, a point label is dependent upon the point it is labeling; if the point is changed or deleted, the label will be changed or deleted accordingly.

Note: To ensure that the size of dimensions or labels is correct when viewed in the Plan View, verify that the plot scale for the project is set correctly in Project Settings > View > Plan View. The plot scale is the factor used to convert from ground units to sheet units (ground units / plot scale = sheet units). For example, if the default plot scale of 600 is used, an object with a length of 600 m in the Plan View will plot with a length of 1 m on paper. In survey feet, the default plot scale of 50 will plot as 1 foot on paper.

Prerequisites:

To create point labels:

  1. Select Label Points in Drafting > Labels to display the Label Points command pane.

Before you select points to label, you will set a few labeling properties.

  2. In the Point label style drop-down list, select the style you want to apply to the new point label, or select <<New Style>> to create a new style using the Label Style Manager.

If the label style you select includes a point symbol, the Symbol codes and Symbol size fields are enabled (see step 5).

  3. Optionally, select a different Layer for the new labels. If necessary, select <<New Layer>> to create a new layer for the labels.
  4. Optionally, enter a value to rotate the label in the Rotation field.

You now have the choice of labeling points individually or labeling multiple points simultaneously as described in the next two steps.

  5. If the selected label style includes a point symbol that you want to change, do either or both of the following:
    • Click the Symbol code edit button and select a different symbol.
    • Enter a different Symbol size.

Note: As an alternative, you can add a point symbol directly to one or more points without creating a label. See Change Point Symbols for instructions.

  6. If the label includes attributes and you want them to display vertically in the label rather than horizontally, check the Display feature code attributes vertically check box.

Note: You must process features codes in your project to enable feature code attribute values to display in your labels.

  7. If the label includes attributes and you want the attribute values to display but not the attribute names, check the Do not display feature code attribute name check box.
  8. If the point is part of line and you want the label to be automatically rotated to align with the associated line segment (at 90º), check the Align label to associated line segment check box.

If the point is the start point in the line, its label is rotated to align with the line segment that follows it. The label for each subsequent point in the line is rotated to align with the segment preceding it.

Note: If the Align label to associated line segment check box is checked and the point is associated with a line segment, the Rotation value is ignored.

  9. To create a label for one or more individual points, do the following:
    1. Click in the Select point to label field.
    2. Select the point in the Plan View.

The label displays with the point. To remove a label, click the point a second time.

    3. Optionally, click additional points to apply labels to those points as well.
  10. To create labels for multiple points simultaneously, do the following:
    1. Click in the Multi-select points to label field.
    2. Select the points you want to label.

For example, select multiple points using Ctrl + click or by drawing a box, or select the Options button to make your selections.

    3. Click the Apply button to create the labels for the selected points.

The labels display with each of the selected points. To remove all of the labels, click the Remove button.

Note: When you create a label for a point, the program-generated point labels that automatically display by default in the Plan View (point name, feature code, and elevation, as applicable) are no longer displayed, even if their respective check boxes are checked on the Point tab in the View Filter Manager. If you want to display these attributes in a point label that you create, be sure to include them in the point label style.

  11. When you are done, click Close.

This command is available in the command pane and by right-clicking in the graphic view.

Note: You can edit the appearance of a selected label, including the position of the leader line's connection to it (top, middle, or bottom), in the Properties pane.
