Assign Media Files to Objects

There are various methods for assigning media files to objects. This topic describes two:

  • Select the object, and then select the media file to assign.
  • Select the media file, and then select the objects to which you want to assign it.

Feel free to experiment to see if other methods might better fit your workflow.

Prerequisites:

To assign a media file by selecting the object first:

  1. In the Project Explorer, Plan View, or 3D View, select the object to which you want to assign one or more media files. Then right-click and select Assign Media Files.

Optionally, you can select multiple objects to which you want to assign the same media file(s).

  2. In the Assign Media Files dialog, do either of the following:
    • To assign one or more files that are already referenced in the project, make your selection in the list. Click to expand any existing media folder to see the media files contained in it. Optionally, select a media folder to assign its entire contents to the selected object. When you are done making your selection, click OK.
    • To assign one or more files that are not already referenced in the project, click the Browse button to navigate to the file(s) you want to assign. Select the file(s) and click the Open button.

Note: If you select to assign a media file that is not already referenced in the project and you have created a project folder, the newly assigned file is copied into the project folder.

If there is a media folder already attached to the selected object, the files are added to the folder. If no media folder is attached to the selected object, one is created to hold the newly assigned files. The newly created folder is named the same as the object to which it is attached. Optionally, you can change the folder name as described in Open, View, and Edit Media Folders.
