Merge Level Runs

Use the Merge Runs command to merge two level runs displayed in the Level Editor into a single run. The merge requires that the last point ID in the first run selected for the merge matches the first point ID in the second run selected. For example, if the first run selected ends on point 1, the second run selected must start on point 1. If necessary, you can merge another existing run with the newly created merged run using the same guidelines, and repeat as necessary.

The ability to merge runs is helpful, for example, if two or more level runs were accidentally specified in the field for what should have been a single run (for example, one of the runs does not include a benchmark point).

When you use the Merge Runs command in conjunction with the Split Runcommand and, optionally, the Combine Leveling Files command, you can remove a flawed portion (one or more setups) of a level run and replace it with a new portion that includes either correctly measured field data (typically for replacing a long portion) or corrected keyed-in data (typically for replacing a short portion). For example, say a level run took 3 days to survey and Day 2 needs to be re-surveyed because of high winds and resulting errors. Instead of having to re-survey the entire 3-day run, the field crew can re-survey just the bad portion of the original run captured on Day 2. Then you can split the original run into 3 parts as described in Split Level Runs and merge the first part, the re-surveyed Day 2 run, and the third part.

Note: If a level data file you are importing includes a run that does not include a benchmark, see this note.

To merge level runs displayed in the Level Editor:

  1. If the Level Editor is not already displayed, do either of the following:
    • Right-click an imported level data file node or the Keyed-In File node in the Project Explorer and select Level Editor from the context menu.
    • Select Level Editor in Survey > Optical and, if prompted, select the level data file in the Select Leveling Files dialog.

The Level Editor dialog displays a tab for each run in the data file, allowing you to view and/or edit each run individually.

  2. Click the Merge Runs button to display the Merge Runs dialogs.
  3. Optionally, in the New Run Name box, enter a name for the new run.

If you do not enter a name, the name of the Start With run is used for the new run name.

  4. In the Start With list, select the run whose setups you want to use for the first part of the new run.
  5. In the Add This list, select the run whose setups you want to use for the second part of the new run.
  6. Click OK.

The Merge Runs dialog closes and the newly created run tab replaces the two merged run tabs in the Level Editor dialog.

If necessary, you can now merge another existing run with the newly created merged run using the same procedure.
